What is Dry Ice Blasting?
Dry ice blasting uses compressed air to propel dry ice pellets onto a contaminated surface. It removes dirt and coatings through three effects working together:
-
Impact
The high-speed pellets strike the surface, cracking and loosening the contamination. This mechanical action begins to break up the unwanted layer and allows the cleaning process to reach beneath it.
-
Thermal shock
At approximately −78°C, the pellets rapidly cool the contamination, making it brittle and weakening its bond with the surface underneath. Cracks form in the unwanted layer, making it easier to remove.
-
Sublimation
On contact, the dry ice changes directly from a solid into a gas. The rapid expansion helps lift the loosened contamination away from the surface. The dry ice itself disappears, leaving no spent blasting media behind.
Together, these effects provide a dry, non-abrasive cleaning process without added water or chemical cleaning agents. With no secondary blasting-media waste, cleanup focuses on the contamination removed.
